Black Tie Events

Dress in “Black Tie” or “White Tie” and you’re ready for good company, excellent food and fine wine.

Evening wear for men is often referred to as Black Tie or a DJ, whereas “White Tie” is an evening tailcoat with white Marcella waistcoat, shirt and bow tie.

We have evening wear hire to suit every occasion. For a black tie dinners you will need:

• A pleated front dinner shirt with either a wing collar or standard collar and bow tie. It doesn’t necessarily have to be black bow tie and depends on how formal the function and your personal persona.
• A dinner jacket that is either single breasted, double breasted or shawl which has rounded lapels.
• Or a white tuxedo, a white jacket, which is in fact off white or cream is always worn with black dress trousers that have a satin stripe running down the seam of each leg.
• Or a Nehru jacket, an elegant longer jacket style with a stand-up collar.

The Duke of Devonshire, Her Majesty’s Representative, point out that Gentlemen are required to wear either grey or black morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat. Admission to the Grandstand a suit or blazer and flannels, shirt and tie are required. Gentlemen not complying with the dress regulations will be asked to leave, so be warned and go prepared. Most regular race goers, equestrians and trainers will own their own black morning wear because black is acceptable at all other functions. Traditionally members of the public wear grey as do the Royals.

Pageboys don’t just look adorable in morning dress – they are an exceptional complement addition to a stylish wedding party.

Pageboy morning coat hire is one of our specialties because we do personally fit every boy in the clothes he will wear on the day after altering them to fit. Supplying clothes for a Pageboy by just asking his age is the reason why most look awful and not the way Bartlett & Butcher operates.

Our experienced sympathetic, patient staff fit children so frequently they will make them feel comfortable and can accurately judge the required sizes. We advise early collection and rarely have to do a refit but are happy to adjust a hired pageboy suit whenever needed.

We have outfits in navy mohair, black herringbone tailcoats and Nehru coats with a variety of brocade waistcoats for Hampshire pageboys.

Sizes for pageboy suit hire start at about four years old. We find that younger children are not normally standing upright enough to do justice to boys’ morning wear hire and that having to stand so long during the ceremony is too much.

We do, however, regularly fit boys less than four in waistcoat, shirt and trousers to match the groom. Please be aware that waistcoats with large patterns do not suit small sizes but nevertheless can be made.
